My Journey
I was fortunate to have had a beautiful childhood growing up in the Sydney bush and having seaside holidays. Unfortunately, I was like many and was affected by allergies to dust, mould and animal dander that manifested as chronic allergic bronchitis. I recall my childhood as taking antibiotics many times a year and using steroid puffers, both of which depleted my microbiome and weakened my immunity. Also, living in the bush I was bitten by many ticks with little concern.
When I moved to the country to attend boarding school, my allergies and health improved dramatically. Hence the environmental connection. Some-thing I witness in my clients regularly. When I returned to Sydney to study nursing at RNSH I was living in sunny beachside suburbs and windsurfing on my days off. This was my health at it’s prime. I connected with herbal medicine using “Herbal life” after I began in the pharmaceutical industry.
This industry was very high pressure, goal oriented and required work long hours and international travel. I thrived on this for some time; however, gradually the increasing stress weakened my detox pathways and enabled my pathogens which would have been hiding in biofilm to become stronger and eventually affect my thyroid after the birth of my first child. A classic case of chronic dysbiosis and stress enabling pathogens to trigger immune dysregulation to attack the weakest link. The first neurological sign I had that potentially had borrelia was waking up paralysed in the arms after taking Amoxycillin for mastitis.
In later years, I was burning the candle at both ends, feeling “wired and tired” and experiencing a sensation of constant pressure from the combination of both work, juggling a family life as a single parent and going to Nature care College to become a practitioner. I was labelled with Fibromyalgia yet refused to take on this label as I knew there was reasons for my symptoms.
Like many women I know, I was being held captive by unbalanced hormones, poor detoxification, chronic dysbiosis and a degree of histamine intolerance.
On reflection, I can understand what was affecting me and creating the fatigue, glassy eyes, brain fog and need to use caffeine as a crutch to get through the day. I now understand how hormones and the moon strengthen pathogens and produce such symptoms. More importantly, I know the recipe to improve detoxification pathways, balance hormones and resolve these symptoms. Unfortunately, when these infections become chronic, they affect people at a cellular level and the mitochondria needs restoring. Your mitochondria are responsible for cellular energy.
I realized that I needed to change my lifestyle if I wanted to feel like my old self again. I began eating more plants and cooking at home. Leafy green vegetables became a staple in my diet. Green smoothies provided a simple daily habit that produced the necessary energy to start my day without caffeine. I focused on yoga and pilates and beach walks, exercises that I enjoyed. I began using some amazing herbs to replenish my energy and manage my stress as well as balance hormones and reduce inflammation. My stress level decreased and my energy increased. I did restore my mitochondria. I have never dieted per say. My weight has fluctuated with stress and hormonal changes. I now have a firm handle on understanding how to use detoxification and hormonaol management for weight loss as well as lifestyle strategies to maintain a healthy weight. Over time, I explored more healthy habits: positive journaling, bushwalking, and using essential oils.
We are forever learning. Like many other health conscious people, I discovered on an Organic Acid Test that I have high levels of oxalates which are another piece of the puzzle for ongoing gut dysbiosis and poor connective tissue not to mention the silent potential to damage kidneys.
My goal is to help you to become a healer in your own home through self-directed nutrition and medicine. My recommendations do not all come in a prescription bottle. I am now literate in food sensitivities being histamine, oxalates, salicylates and lectins. My solutions incorporate strengthening your cellular energy to improve fatigue and brain fog, to supporting your immune system to cleansing your channels of elimination. I utilise essential oils, herbal tinctures and supplements and recipes to incorporate lifestyle habits that you can engage in very easily without disrupting your busy life.
My other great passion is helping women to create a life that they love to live!
In Covid times, I have been focusing on helping people navigate the lockdowns and new stressors. The potential of herbal medicine to improve health is quite remarkable. Now more than ever, it has the capacity to help our mental health, support our nervous system, stress response and improve our detox pathways and ultimately our immune system to be able to manage the current situation.
