Fibroids

Fibroids are typically benign abnormal growths that can develop in or on a woman’s uterus. They are extremely common – according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), around 70 to 80 percent of women will develop fibroids by the age of 50. Although they are often without symptoms, in some cases they can cause severe abdominal pain and heavy periods, leading many women to turn to natural medicine for fibroids treatment.

Types of Fibroids

Fibroids grow in different areas and as such are named according to their location. The different types include:

  • Intramural fibroids

These grow on the lining of the uterus and are the most common fibroid type

  • Subserosal fibroids

These grow on the outside of the uterus

  • Pedunculated fibroids

When subserosal fibroids grow a stem, basically a slim base that supports the tumour, they become pedunculated fibroids

  • Submucosal fibroids

These grow in the inner lining of your uterus. While they’re less common than other types, when they do develop, they can lead to significant menstrual bleeding and problems with conceiving.

Causes and Risk factors

While it’s hard to pinpoint direct causes for the growth of fibroids, it is believed that hormones, family history and pregnancy significantly contribute to their growth in the body. The following factors can also increase susceptibility to developing fibroids:

  • Being over 30 years old

  • Possibly on hormones
    (oestrogen & progesterone)

  • Heredity

  • Pregnancy

  • Being of African-American descent

  • Being over a certain weight
