Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is a condition in which fifteen or more small follicles form on a woman’s ovary in a two to nine millimetre long pearl necklace-like pattern – as opposed to the expected two to five follicles. I can provide natural medicine for PCOS that aims to manage the condition and support the sufferer.

PCOS can cause fertility issues for sufferers of the condition, as ovaries with an excessive number of follicles typically do not grow to maturity nor do they become capable of producing eggs that are able to be fertilised in some women.

Symptoms of PCOS

Symptoms that may benefit from natural medicine for PCOS include:

·       Amenorrhoea (no periods) – some women become unable to menstruate and are unable to do so for many years

·       Anxiety and low moods

·       Excessive hair growth and acne

·       Hair loss from the scalp

·       Irregular menstrual cycles – changes in frequency of ovulation can affect the frequency with which a woman menstruates

·       Weight gain or difficulties losing weight

·       Sugar imbalances and insulin resistance

Megan is able to help you manage the symptoms of the condition.

What Causes PCOS?

It is believed that around one in four women will suffer PCOS throughout their reproductive years. The exact causes of the condition are not well known; however, genetics and lifestyle factors are theoretically believed to be major contributing factors.

There appears to be a correlation between genes that control the production of insulin and the pathophysiology and risk factors of PCOS development. There are also lifestyle and environmental factors such as stress, diet and exercise, and pollution, which all contribute to the development and control of PCOS. I look at many of these factors to deliver effective natural treatments.

Are There Different Types of PCOS?

Yes, there appear to be many different types in a polycystic pattern.

It is necessary to distinguish between PCO and PCOS, as there must to be two symptoms present in the pattern belonging to PCOS. These symptoms are irregular cycles (fewer than 6 menstrual cycles per year), androgen excess, and polycystic ovaries. The syndrome typically has androgen excess causing symptoms such as hirsutism, acne, hair loss, amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, infertility issues, and insulin resistance resulting in weight issues. There are theories that these symptoms and menstrual irregularities are linked in some women to higher luteinising hormone (LH) levels and marginally lower levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH).

Another major issue is insulin resistance, which can occur in PCOS. Many studies have concluded that in the ovary, insulin may stimulate androgen production, causing the liver to make less sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG).

How Can I help?

I can prescribe a number of herbs to assist with amenorrhoea and other symptoms. To enhance the effectiveness of these herbs and nutrients, I will also encourage a low carbohydrate, low sugar diet with low glycaemic load foods to assist with regulating insulin levels. Studies have shown that diet and lifestyle factors, which form the basis of natural medicine for PCOS, can play a significant role in the prevention and management of PCOS.

Is there any test I can do to confirm a diagnosis?

I may recommend you perform a hormone saliva test to establish the level of your hormones. If I suspect PCOS as an underlying pathology, I may refer you to a G.P or gynaecologist for further testing such as an internal ultrasound.
